In 1983, Corazon Aquino was a modest Filipino housewife who spent her time watching television and cooking. Three years later she became the guiding force behind one of the most extraordinary political events of the 20th century. In 1954, Corazon Cojuangco married opposition politician Benigno Aquino. When dictator Ferdinand Marcos imposed martial law on the Philippines in 1972. Benigno was imprisoned. After his release in 1980. to undergo surgery in the United State, the Aquino family settled in Massachusetts, where Corazon lived the life of suburban housewife and mother. In August 1983 Benigno returned to his country and was brutally murdered. Outraged Filipinos plunged the land into chaos, and Corazon suddenly found herself the focus of a grass-roots movement to ourst Marcos. Her honestly and integrity appealed to the masses and won her the backing of the powerful Catholic Church. In February 1986 election, Aquino was blatantly, cheated of victory. but when key elements of th emilitary defected to her camp, Marcos was forced to flee the country. Auino, infact the the victor in the election, emerged as the new leader of the Philippine people. In Feabruary, 1987, in a grand show of support, Filipinos ratified Aquino's new constituition, with nothing but a deep religious faith and an equally unshakeable belief in the power of the people to change thier lives. Corazon Aquino unleashed a whirlwind that sweap away a corrupt dictator and ushered in a new era of democracy in the Philippines.
