An important skill that a language teacher needs to develop, aside from listening and speaking, are reading and writing. The capacity to read and the ability to write are indications of communicative competence and are considered essential tools in almost all facets of undertaking. In the context of education, this means that you, as students, are able to respond to a text critically, understand the implicit and explicit message of the text being read, and construct coherent, organize, and grammatically-correct paragraphs which when put together result in well-written compositions. In the workplace, this means that you, as future employees, are able to prepare and write technical reports, such as memoranda, minutes of the meeting, projects proposals, manuals, guidelines, procedures and office protocols. In a more complex undertaking such as research, it requires compliance with the research process and the ability to document research information in a scholarly manner. Indeed, the development of your reading and writing skills cannot be overempasized.
