Although the third edition has contributed significantly toward achieving this goal, the changes introduced in the fourth edition should further enhance the utility of the text. As always, the new changes are designed to best serve the interest of the student.
The most visible addition to the book is the introduction of short cases at the end of most chapters. These cases deviate from familiar storytelling case presentations in that the facts of the situation are given in a more straightforward manner. However, they differ from regular textbook problems in that the amount of information conveyed by the case may not be tailored exactly to what the decision maker would need to solve the problem. In many cases, the presentations of the cases are made deliberately ambiguous. The objective, of course, is to get the student to think about the solution to the problem in a nonregimented manner. Since some of the cases are taken from published literature, the student is encouraged to consult the original sources (which are cited in the text) whenever possible."
