It was written, as nearly as could be done, in strict accordance with a set of rules which the author framed for himself at the outset, and which, he feels, are pedagogically sound. These rules are the following: 1. Be clear. You are not writing for experts. Make the scope and plan of the book evident to the least gifted student. Present a logical and adequate division of the matter to be studied. Used a direct style and simle diction. 2. In complex matters, state the essential doctrine in the plainest manner, and leave the rest to the teacher. In matters easy to grasp, some prolixity is permissible. 3. Employ an abundance of illustrations to relieve the strain of abstract reasoning, and to impress principles distinctly upon mind and memory. 4 Be reasonably complete, but make the book one that can be handily mastered in a single school year.
